Family Counselling

Family work is designed to help families through difficult times, when there is tension or conflict within the family. It can be helpful for families who are dealing with a variety of issues, such as communication breakdowns, divorce, behavioural or emotional problems with children, or issues with blended families.

What is Family Counselling?

During family sessions, a trained clinician will support family members identify and understand the root cause of the problems they are experiencing. Together, we work to develop strategies and tools that will help each family member to communicate more effectively, strengthen relationships, and achieve a more harmonious home life.

  • Family sessions usually involve all family members present in one room. This helps to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone can express their thoughts and feelings openly. Depending on the goals of the therapy, individual sessions with family members and the therapist may also be incorporated.

During the first session, the therapist will gather information and assess the family’s needs. They may ask about the family’s history, any traumas, relationships, or events that have contributed to the current situation. The therapist may also ask about communication styles, beliefs, and values, which can be helpful in understanding patterns of behavior that may have emerged in the family.

  • Before the first session, the clinician will contact each person separately, and check in about their concerns.

Family work is designed to be a collaborative process between the family and the therapist. The therapist will provide guidance and tools for the family to use in their daily lives outside of therapy. They will work with each family member to help them understand their role within the family, identify strengths and weaknesses within the family dynamic, and develop strategies to manage stress and conflict.

  • One of the primary goals of family therapy is to improve communication within the family. The therapist will endeavour to work with the family to understand how to communicate with each other more effectively, and how to constructively resolve conflicts. The skills learned during family therapy can help to improve the family’s overall emotional well-being, create more positive relationships between family members, and create a more supportive and healthy home environment.

Family therapy can also help to strengthen individuals within the family, create a sense of connectedness, and lead to greater happiness and fulfilment for everyone involved.
