Relationship Counselling

Relationship counselling is a form of therapy aimed at supporting partners improve their relationship. It can be beneficial for those who are experiencing communication issues, conflict, infidelity, or other challenges that are impacting their partnership.

What is Relationship Counselling?

Relationship counselling can be a highly effective way for partners to improve their relationship, build stronger emotional bonds, and resolve any issues that may be affecting their partnership. By working with a trained clinician, and implementing effective communication strategies, partners can overcome challenges and build a more fulfilling, healthy relationship.

  • A safe space for open communication: relationship counselling creates an environment where partners can express their feelings, thoughts, and concerns openly and honestly without judgment.

Learning effective communication skills: therapy offers an opportunity to learn more effective communication skills that promote healthy and constructive exchanges between partners.

Identifying and addressing relationship issues: Through therapy, partners can pinpoint and address the issues impacting their relationship, such as unhealthy communication patterns or conflicting interests.

Developing strategies to improve the relationship: Working with a therapist, partners can identify strategies to improve their relationship and resolve any underlying issues.

  • Before the first session, the clinician will contact each person separately, and check in about their concerns.

Relationship counselling is a collaborative process between the couple and their clinician. Initially, the clinician will need to be guided; to gain knowledge of the couple's relationship to understand the issues at play. The assessment process typically begins with a series of questions aimed at understanding each partner's perspective on the relationship issue.

The therapist may then ask the couple to implement strategies or attend to exercises designed to facilitate communication and understanding.

  • A clinician can work with the partners to identify the root cause of their relationship issues and develop strategies to address them. These strategies may involve developing communication skills, setting boundaries, or behavioural changes.

The clinician may use a variety of therapeutic techniques, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, emotion-focused therapy, or solution-focused therapy.
